Justin Shaw began working on his debut solo show The Wrestling Play in 2015 through Playwrights Workshop Montreal Young Creators Unit, and with the funding support of the Theatre Engaging Communities grant, premiered at the 2017 Island Fringe Festival, earning the Patron’s Pick distinction. The play was later presented as part of the 2017 Wood Buffalo Alberta Culture Days Festival, Nextfest Arts & Culture Festival, YMM Food Fest Midnight Madness, and St. Peters Courthouse Theatre 2019 Season.

“Funny and truthful and moving – sometimes all at once. The writing was especially impressive. The structure was unusual and really assured – the story was completely satisfying for the audience and I have been thinking about the themes and the elegance with which you wove them all together.” – Duncan MacIntosh

“The Wrestling Play is Shaw’s debut as a playwright, and it’s an impressive first effort… It helps that he’s played by an engaged, intense, endlessly energetic Shaw. It’s a bravura performance, probably the best of the 2017 Fringe, and I gladly joined in Shaw’s richly deserved standing ovation.” – Sean McQuaid

This two-person classic Canadian drama was originally presented for the benefit of Theatre; Just Because at the Heritage Shipyard in Fort McMurray, Alberta in partnership with the Fort McMurray Heritage Society. Met with favourable reviews, it was remounted at The Guild in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island with the support of the Theatre Engaging Communities grant as part of the 2019 Guild Summer Festival.

“Executing a two-person full-length play is challenging at the best of times. Doing so in a non-traditional theatre space in the open air, complete with what Mother Nature dishes out, is an achievement of the highest order. Helen and Justin brought us into Mary and Jacob's world, minds and hearts and gave us an unforgettable night of theatre.” – Russell Thomas

“It felt so good to be made to feel… it made my heart swell and my head spin.” – Jay Telegdi
